Hip Stability and It's Effect on Running Performance

Hip stability is an important aspect of proper running form. Without it, you may notice poor lower extremity alignment or a pelvis that becomes un-level during ground contact and/or midstance. Any loss of stability increases the risk of injury and reduces performance capabilities. Therefore, stability is an important characteristic to train with functional movements, as well as reinforce during your runs.

Have you ever noticed someone at a race or on the road that has a noticeable stability issue? It may look something like this…

Treadmill running analysis shows poor single leg stability and valgus collapse in runner.

In the following video, I received some insight from local physical therapist Chris Wolfe, as he broke down hip stability as it relates to running. In his demonstration, he did a great job showing the difference between maintaining stability and losing it so you can do a better job detecting issues before they become problematic.

Are you curious about what movements you can supplement your running with to improve hip stability? I am a big fan of the step down exercise which challenges single leg strength, stability, and balance. The step down has great carryover to running but you still have to emphasize good form and hip positioning throughout your runs.
